Abstract

1518614 Change speed gear control AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 12 April 1977 [20 April 1976] 15891/76 Heading F2D An automatic transmission has four forward speeds and reverse, there being a forward clutch 11, a second gear brake band 13, a third gear brake band 14, a top and revearse gear clutch 12 and a reverse gear brake band 15. Manual selection of the lower three gears, reverse, neutral and a park lock is by a selection valve 19. In position D of valve 19 the forward gears are controlled by a valve 42 whose position is responsive to output speed, through linkwork from a speed responsive device 57, and to throttle pedal position acting on a spring- loaded abutment 58 on a rod 54 in the linkwork. To prevent partial movement of valve 42 to a new ratio position causing clutch or brake slippage snap-action valves 39, 41, 84 associated with second, third and fourth gears only open when there is sufficient pressure generated upstream of a restricted flow to drain. When the third and fourth gear valves 41, 84 snap open on upshift they cause the second and third valves 39, 41 respectively to close. Accumulators 38, 90 smooth the engagement of clutches 11, 12 respectively. An accumulator 98 smooths the engagement of third gear from fourth at small throttle openings, the accelerator controlling a valve 97. Kickdown is provided by an actuator 108 acting on rod 54 of the control linkwork when valve 97 is moved sufficiently. Valve 97 also controls a pressure modulator 17 to increase pressure as the throttle is depressed. The emptying and filling of the actuators 131, 141, for brakes 13, 14 happens at substantially the same rate to provide smooth shifts. The pressure from modulator 17 is also increased in reverse.
