Abstract

A degerminating solution is used at a temperature of up to 70 DEG C with an active chlorine concentration between 50 and 2000 mg/litre and a pH between 5 and 8. The solution is prepared shortly before use by mixing small amounts of highly concentrated active chlorine solution into a carrier solution which is held at less than 70 DEG C and has a pH between 5 and 8. The process permits effective and rapid degermination without the use of high temperatures and without health risk. The process is suitable in particular for degerminating packaging materials for the food industry.
