Abstract
1518558 A/D and D/A converters GENERAL INSTRUMENT MICROELECTRONICS Ltd 18 March 1977 [24 March 1976] 11926/76 Heading H3H For A-to-D conversion, one of two capacitances Cl, C2 is charged by the analogue input I, the capacitance being selected according to the polarity of the input as determined by a comparator K, then the other capacitance is charged until a predetermined relationship between the voltages on the two capacitances is detected by the comparator, the time required for the latter charging being digitized. The latter charging is done from a constant-current source I1 or I2 according to the capacitor being charged, these sources having opposite polarities. The time is digitized by counting up a counter 7. For D-to-A conversion, the counter 7 is preset with the digital input, apart from the sign bit which selects one of the capacitors C1, C2 which is then charged from the respective source I1, I2 as the counter is counted down to zero at which the analogue output is gated from an operational amplifier K1 fed from the capacitors.
