Abstract

1517947 Carbon composites DUCOMMUN Inc 1 Sept 1975 [29 Oct 1974] 35918/75 Heading C1A A carbon composite product is produced by compressing a multiplicity of thermoplastic fibres at 300-410‹F into a substrate of known volume to crimp and lightly fuse together adjacent fibres at their cross-over points and the shaped substrate is then pyrolysed to form a carbon fibrous substrate which is to be densified by maintaining the fibrous substrate in the presence of a carbonaceous gas at 1900-2300‹F to deposit carbon interstitially in the substrate. The shaped carbon fibrous substrate may be heated to 2900-4350‹F prior to densification. The thermoplastic fibres are preferably oxidized stabilized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres in the form of randomly oriented individual fibres or interwoven to form a fabric or felt.
