Abstract

A display panel having electrodes which define display points or symbols to be represented is filled with an electrochromic substance which visibly changes its optical properties under the action of an electric field. Drive circuits selectively deliver current pulses to selected electrodes in order to trip visible changes in the substance. For this purpose, the novel operating method uses, in a time-division multiplex mode, a sequence, interrupted by recovery pulses, of short current pulses of an intensity that is lower than usual to date. Because disturbing saturation effects now no longer occur, the total time for the display is nevertheless shortened.
