Abstract

Infiating. - An automatic actuating-apparatus for inflating life-buoys, operating fire-extinguishers and alarms, of the type in which a retaining member of absorbent or readilyfusible material is used, comprises a screwed actuating- member 1 which may be rotated by a spring drum 5 normally under tension but restrained by a paper or fusible-metal retaining-ring 3. This ring 3 passes round a pin 14 on the drum and a pin 15 on the casing 16, and may be broken by the action of water or steam, or ' when necessary by hand by means of a metallic or silken thread passing through it. When the retaining-ring fails, the drum is released and its rotation causes axial movement of the actuating member 1 by means of its screw thread, and the point 2 perforates a capsule of compressed air for inflating life-buoys.
