Abstract

1517352 Detecting earth faults ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUSTRIES Inc 16 June 1975 [17 June 1974] 25582/75 Heading H2K A neutral-to-earth fault on a line L, N completes a positive feedback path around an amplifier 25 and the oscillations thus produced trip a circuit breaker 5, 6. A first core-balance transformer CT-1, which detects line-to-earth faults as well as constituting part of the feedback path, is connected to the amplifier input, and the amplifier output is connected via a tuning capacitor C-1 to a second core balance transformer CT-2. The neutral is earthed at the source, and thus the presence of a neutral-toearth fault at any other point completes a conductive loop linking both cores, rendering the amplifier unstable. Any output from the amplifier, whether due to line or neutral faults, switches on a transistor Q in alternate half cycles to trigger an SCR via an R-C delay circuit R-5, C-3. The SCR is connected in series with a rectifier BR and the circuit breaker coil 6 between line and neutral conductors, thereby controlling the circuit breaker. The voltage across the SCR when it is not conducting provides a power supply for the circuit.
