Abstract
1516832 Credit cards and the like EMI Ltd 21 May 1975 [27 Feb 1974] 8831/74 Heading B6A [Also in Division G4] A security document has a coating 2 comprising magnetic and non-magnetic materials disposed in correlated patterns, e.g. a magnetic accicular γ Fe 2 O 3 layer 4 with inset stripes 3 of I.R. absorbtive C. The strips 3 may be below, or flush with the surface of layer 4, and may extend for the whole layer thickness (Fig. 4, not shown). An I.R. reflective layer 5 is provided. In alternatives, the non-magnetic material has U.V., I.R. or #-ray transmissive or reflective properties, or thermal or electrical properties which can be sensed. Verifying apparatus senses both the magnetic and non- magnetic materials and if the signals therefrom show correlated patterns, the document is taken as genuine. In Fig. 6, the apparatus has an I.R. source 7, I.R. sensor 8, D.C. magnetic field source 9 and a magnetic sensor 10. Strips 3 moving past sensor 8, or layer 4 moving past sensor 10 generate pulsed signals. These signals are balanced and delayed so that equal magnitude signals arrive simultaneously at differencing circuit 16, Fig. 8. The output from 16 is fed via integrator 17, threshold device 18 and invertor 19 to AND gate 20. One sensor output is also fed via integrator 21, threshold devices 22, 23 and invertor 24 to the gate. Device 25 applies a signal to the gate when the document has past the sensors. A verification signal issues at 26.
