Abstract

1516633 Character reader STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 4 Sept 1975 [5 Sept 1974] 38827/74 Heading G4R A reader for characters formed from a master character such as that of Fig. 1 formed as a closed character has an array of sensors 31 arranged to detect the presence of markings in portions of the master character that may be omitted to form specific characters e.g. the absence of lines 2, 3 forms an E, of line 4 forms an A, of 3 and 4 a P &c. The sensors feed a circuit comparing the missing lines with the master character to determine which character is being read. The master character may be formed as four rectangles (Fig. 4, not shown). The reader may contain photo-cells or may sense magnetic markings.
