Abstract

1516202 Purifying hydrocarbons by adsorption UNION CARBIDE CORP 7 July 1975 [8 July 1974] 28489/75 Heading C5E Formation of carbonyl sulphide during the selective adsorption of H 2 S from a hydrocarbon stream containing H 2 S and CO 2 is suppressed by carrying out the adsorption in the vapour phase at 60-120‹F and 200-1200 psia using a crystalline zeolite adsorbent having a pore diameter of at least 5 Angstroms, containing 0À7-3 weight per cent adsorbed water and having at least 45% of the framework aluminium atoms associated with at least one cation of Be, Mg, Ca and Sr. The zeolite can be the calcium forms of zeolite A, X or Y, mordenite, chabazite, faujasite or zeolite Y, L or #. Natural gas 10, containing up to 5 mole percent H 2 S, 0À5-55 mole per cent CO 2 , up to 25 mole per cent of hydrocarbons having more than one carbon atom and a water content of up to saturation is passed through the adsorbent bed 12. A portion 16 of the purified product is used to cool the bed 18 which has been regenerated and is then heated to 550‹F in a furnace 22 and used to desorb the bed 26. Water injected through line 28 raises the water vapour content of the gas 24 to 0À185 mole per cent and ensures that the bed, when used for the adsorption, contains 0À7-3 weight per cent water.
