Abstract

1516048 Chloralkali electrolysis ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 6 Sept 1976 36859/76 Heading C7B Chloralkali electrolysis of NaCl is conducted in a cell divided by a fluorinated cation exchange membrane having carboxylic ion-exchange groups, under such conditions that the membrane passes 2À0-3À5 mole of water per Faraday. The membrane desirably has an i-x capacity of 0À5-4À0 meq/gm, a Tg at least 20‹C below the temperature of electrolysis (e.g. below 70‹C), a MW such that its volumetric flow-rate is 100 mm<SP>3</SP>/sec at 150-300‹C, a thickness 20-500Á and an electric resistance 0À5-10 #/cm<SP>2</SP>. Membranes disclosed are hydrolyzed copolymers of TFE with; CF 2 = CFO(CF 2 ) 3 COOCH 3 and optionally also CF 2 = CFOC 3 F 7 ; CF 2 = CFCOOCH 3 ; or CF 2 = CFO-CF 2 (CF 3 )O(CF 2 ) 2 COOCH 3 . Unreactive polymers e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, or copoly(ethylene/TFE) may be included. A cloth or other porous support therefor is useful. Usual conditions are used with mono or bi-polar operation. An NaCl concentration of 2À5-4À5N may be maintained.
