1515452 Diffusion apparatus; artificial lung NIPPON ZEON CO Ltd 23 April 1976 [2 May 1975 15 March 1976] 16634/76 Headings B1L and B1X [Also in Division D1] An end portion of a bundle 6 of filaments 5 is bonded by immersing the end portion in a binder liquid and preventing wicking of the binder along the bundle by the action of a second liquid which wets the filaments more readily than the binder liquid or of a gas or vapour selected from ammonia, primary amines and secondary amines. Preferably the bundle comprises 8000 or more hollow permeable filaments of external diameter 0.26 or 0.3 mm and the binder is used to form a tube-plate 7 at each end of the bundle. The bundle is disposed in the casing 1 of a blood dialysis unit, so that blood passes through the hollow filaments and metabolic wastes diffuse into dialysate 35. Alternatively the apparatus serves as an artificial lung to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.
