Abstract

1515436 Ultrasonic imaging; scanning arrangements WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 22 April 1976 [23 April 1975] 16308/76 Heading G1G An imaging apparatus comprises an array 26 of receiving elements 62, Fig. 5, for receiving energy (e.g. acoustic energy) from a field of view, the array having a higher concentration of the elements where energy is received from the centre of the field than elsewhere to give a relatively high resolution at the centre of said field. The apparatus also includes means for processing and displaying signals derived from the elements. The target area may be isonified by a transmittter array 14 mounted similarly to the receiver 26, effectively a circular array in operation. As shown for a fixed viewing range, both arrays 14, 26 are mounted on a common rotation axis behind a lens 30 and the elements of both arrays near the axis may be common. For variable range use, the arrays may be separated Fig. 4 (not shown) and may have different and variable angular speeds and pulse repetition rates. The synchronized PPI 42 incorporates a long persistence CRT 44. The radial sweep may be non- linear, or linear combined with a sampler 40 having a non-uniform rate. In a further embodiment Fig. 11 (not shown), false colour may be used to give range information. A further arrangement (not shown) gives a rectangular scan. Partial or total isonification of the field of view can be effected without the lens (30', Fig. 4).
