1514809 Indicating temperature RPR Inc 19 Aug 1975 34442/75 Heading G1D The temperature of a high temperature surface is rapidly measured by a device comprising a heat conducting thin walled tubular member 12 defining a chamber 44 and having a dark outer surface coated with at least one liquid crystal composition 14, there being at one end of the member 12 a rounded tip 32 in heat conducting relationship with the member and, at its opposite end, a heat sink member 20. A tubular plastics guard 16 may be slidably received on the member 12. As described, a single liquid crystal may be employed, or a plurality of liquid crystals. In the latter case the compositions may be superimposed, or may be employed as radially spaced longitudinal stripes, or in consecutive areas along the length of member 12. A protective film of polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane or an acrylic film may cover the liquid crystal composition(s). Scored lines 52 constitute temperature scale markings and may be linearly spaced or spaced according to initial calibration. The guard 16 may be locked in any position and serves to protect the user from the heat sink, as a support for a clasp 66, as a protection for a portion of the liquid crystal, and as a fixed temperature marker. The member 12 may be of aluminium or copper, the heat sink member 20 of aluminium, copper or iron, and the tip may be ceramic.
