Abstract
1514507 Photometric measurement of absorption PERKIN-ELMER CORP 19 Aug 1975 [22 Aug 1974 (2)] 34472/75 Heading G1A Apparatus for this comprises an unchopped optical system with source 271(a) or (b) producing sample and reference beams imaged on to PIN diode detectors 295, 299 feeding signals proportional to their light flux inputs via parametric amplifiers 300, 296 to means giving signals which are proportional to the logarithm of the detector signals and of which a summing amplifier finds the difference to give an output signal proportional to absorbance. An amplifier with logarithmic feedback obtains these logarithmically proportioned signals. Hollow cathode lamps 271a (manganese) and 271b (cobalt) with lenses 272a and 272b form beams selectable by rotatable mirror 277. Movable filter 281 is positioned to pass the wavelength of the selected lamp. Coated beam-splitter 287 transmits 90% and reflects 10%. Lens 285 images field stop S 1 near the entrance of sample cell 71 and aperture stop S 2 near its exit, so that the beam misses the cell sides. Lens 291 images S' 1 at S" 1 at condenser 309 which images S' 2 at S" 2 within the active area of detector 295. Lens 297 images S 1 at S 1 ' and S 2 at S 2 ' and the second of the lenses 298 images S 1 ' at S 1 ". Shutter 284 is closed except when measuring. As in Fig. 3, cell 71, made of silver rests on plastic V block 913 on aluminium block 907 with aluminium cover 915 all surrounded by foam plastic insulation 931. The sample reaches it via stainless tube 911. To keep the temperature of space 917, in which are also located the circuits, constant, thermistor 921 and device 925 operate heat pump 923, from which heat is removed by water flowing in passage 929 in metal block 927.
