Suitably, a graphite carbon material is impregnated with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble metal chloride and orthophosphoric acid; the impregnated material dried in air, and then heat treated with a gradual rise in temperature to 500 to 600‹C. to form 0À1 to 15% by weight of a metal ultraphosphate, based on the initial weight of the material, in the pores of the material; the heat-treated material is then cooled and impregnated with a solution of a film-forming polymer resin to encapsulate the ultraphosphate and enhance the contact characteristics of the material; and the impregnated material is then heat-treated with a gradual rise in temperature to 180-250‹C. according to the polymer used, until the resin is fully polymerized, the dry residue of the polymer being from 0À5 to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the material after impregnation with the aqueous solution of the metal chloride and orthophosphoric acid and subsequent treatment to form the ultraphosphate. Specified metal chlorides include those of manganese, zinc, magnesium, lithium, potassium, aluminium, iron and lead, and specified polymers include those of unsaturated fatty acids, vegetable drying oils, polyesters, glyptal-melamine resins, epoxy resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins, furyl alcohol resins and polyamides. The use of a mixture of cobalt linoleate with a glyptal-melamine resin, is exemplified.
