Abstract

151,383. Wild, L. W. June 30, 1919. Magnetic tests and measurements.-The hardness of ferrous metals is determined by.measuring the residual magnetism. The specimen is intro. duced into a standard magnetizing-coil a enclosed in a removable yoke b. A current sufficient to saturate the specimen is flashed on to the coil a for a very short time, say less than one second, by a switch c. The specimen is then removed from the coil a and inserted into a search coil e connected to a fluxmeter or ballistic galvanometer d, the throw of which is noted on quickly withdrawing the specimen. A condenser f reduces sparking at the switch c.
