Abstract

1513726 Optically active alanine derivatives SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 29 July 1975 [29 July 1974] 33322/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises laevo-rotatory isomers of compounds having the general formula wherein Y and Z are each individually hydrogen, chlorine or fluorine; X is oxygen or sulphur; and W is alkyl, haloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or the group -N = CR 1 R 2 where R 1 and R 2 are each individually, hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or together to form an alkylene bridge which is optionally interrupted with one or more hetero atoms. They may be prepared by forming with an opticallyactive organic nitrogenous base a salt of the following acid isolating the salt of the laevorotatory isomer of the acid and converting this salt of the laevorotatory isomer to the desired optically-active alanine ester under conditions which do not alter or not substantially alter the stereo chemistry of the reactants or the products. The laevorotatory isomers of Formula I may be used as active ingredients in herbicidal compositions for controlling wild oats.
