Abstract

1512806 Locking suspension units on braking HONDA GIKEN KOGYO KK 23 July 1975 30887/75 Heading F2S [Also in Division B7] In a motor cycle having a front fork comprising a pair of telescopic shock absorbers, and a brake on the front wheel, the brake includes an element, which is angularly displaced relative to the fork when the brake is applied to actuate means arranged to resist compression of the shock absorbers by extra load transferred to the front wheel due to application of the brake. In Fig. 1 each leg of the fork 20 comprises a fork tube 22 telescopically engaged with a lower casing 21, and the mounting plate 14 of an internal expanding shoe brake is rotatably mounted on the front axle 11. Linkage 40, 41, 46 extends between the mounting plate 14 and a lower bridge member 33 connecting the tubes 22 so that torque acting on the plate 14 when the brake is applied produces an upward force on the member 33 which balances the transfer of load on to the front fork 20 resulting from the braking action. In Fig. 4, each of the shock absorbers in the front fork 20 includes first and second chambers A, C between which hydraulic fluid flows when the fork is compressed, and flow between the chambers A, C is inhibited when the brake is applied. The brake mounting plate 14 is connected by linkage 111, 114, 117 to a locking valve 105 which is normally held by a spring 109 in a position wherein the chambers A, C communicate through passages 103, 104 and a space S but closes when the brake is applied. The arrangement is such that if the forks are subjected to a shock load when the brake is applied the valve 105 is forced open by increased pressure in the chamber A so that the shock can be absorbed. A one-way valve 107 allows extension of the forks evenwhen the valve 105 is closed. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the front wheel is provided with a disc brake including a caliper which is pivotally mounted on one leg of the front fork and arranged to actuate a locking valve when the brake is applied. The locking valve may have a leak hole which permits limited communication between the chambers of the shock absorber even when the valve is closed.
