Abstract

151,243. Apple, V. G. Sept. 15, 1919, [Convention date]. Coils and conductors; commutators; cores; insulation.-Armatures for dynamo-electric machines are constructed by applying pressure to stacked laminµ coated with a liquid condensation product to make the core self-supporting, coating the winding with a condensation product and applying pressure and heat to reform the winding, and then applying a second coating of condensation product with greater heat and pressure to form an armour covering. The laminµ are coated and pressed so as to form a structure which is self-supporting and which may be bound integrally to its spider, while in the press, by an intervening layer of heat-hardened condensation product. The coils are then wound and impregnated and the wound core is placed in a mould in which the conductors are pressed into uniform configuration. The condensation product is partially hardened by a preliminary hot pressing operation at this stage. After cooling, the armature is placed in another mould 18, Fig. 5, and commutator bars 20, having connecting-wires 23 placed in holes 24, as shown in Fig. 6, are inserted. Additional insulating material is placed so as to form, under the greater pressure and heat applied, the commutator support 21 and the armour covering 24. The mould may carry pins which enter the holes in the commutator bars and support them during the pressing operation. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also claims for an armature having its component parts and commutator held together by or its wires coated with an adhesive which is substantially unaffected by oils, insoluble in water and resistant to heat. It also comprises claims for an armature having its coils covered with or cemented to its core by a condensation product. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
