Abstract

1511589 Consolidating wells HALLIBURTON CO 20 Oct 1976 43587/76 Heading E1F A method of consolidating an incompetent formation comprises a) contacting the formation with an aqueous preflush solution to condition the formation for the acceptance of a hardenable organic resin; b) contacting the formation with the hardenable organic resin; c) contacting the formation with a spacer solution so that the resin is distributed therein; and d) causing the resin to harden. The resin, preferably an epoxy resin, a phenol-aldehyde resin, a furfuryl alcohol resin, a urea-aldehyde resin or a mixture thereof, is combined in an aqueous or liquid hydrocarbon carrier with a resin-to-sand coupling agent, e.g. an amino silane having the general formula where R, is a straight or branched chain C 1-4 alkylene radical, R 5 is H, a C 1-4 alkyl amine or a C 1-4 alkyl radical, R 6 is a C 1-2 alkyl radical, and m is an integer of from 1-4; a monomeric resin diluting liquid, e.g. a phenol, formaldehyde, furfuryl alcohol or furfural; and a dispersing agent, e.g. furfural, diethyl phthalate or a mixture thereof. The resin is hardened by an aqueous solution or an inorganic acid, organic acid or acid forming chemicals. The spacer solution may be an aqueous or hydrocarbon liquid, the latter having a non-emulsifying cationic surface active agent. A hard permeable pack may be formed by placing a quantity of resin coated, particulated solids between the formation and the wellbore. Any of the aqueous solutions mentioned above may contain an alkali metal halide, an alkaline-earth metal halide, or a mixture thereof and a non-emulsifying cationic surface active agent.
