1511270 Making reinforced cementitious compositions OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 17 Dec 1975 51638/75 Heading C1H [also in Divisions C3 and Dl Reinforced cementitious compositions are made by coating glass fibres with a size comprising at least one water-soluble polymer and dispersing the coated glass fibres throughout an aqueous cementitious system, the rate of solution of the polymer in the aqueous cementitious composition being adjusted by inclusion in the size, prior to coating on to the fibres, of a solution rate modifier comprising sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, potassium hydroxide, tetramethylammonium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. The solution rate may additionally be modified by use of a plasticiser. The polymer may be cationic, e.g. poly(ethylene imine), ethoxylated and propoxylated poly- (ethylene imine), poly(N,N,N-trimethylaminoethylmethacrylate methylsulphate), and homopolymers and copolymers of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate; anionic, e.g. poly(acrylic acid), poly(methacrylic acid), poly(sodium vinyl sulphonate), copolymers of acrylic acid and copolymers of methacrylic acid; or non-ionic, e.g. dextrinised starches, poly(ethylene oxide), poly(acrylamide), poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) and poly(vinyl methylether). The cementitious matrix may be sodium silicate, calcium silicate, cement, concrete, mortar and gypsum. The calcium silicate matrix may be made from siliceous materials such as Portland cement, siliceous sand, quartz, diatomaceous earth, clays, silica gel and perlite and calcareous materials such as Portland cement, quicklime and slaked lime. Cellulosic fibres e.g. pulp, cotton, straw, bagasse, wood flour, hemp, and rayon may be included in the cementitious composition. Coupling agents (e.g. organic silanes or chrome complexes) and lubricants (e.g. polyethylene glycol) may be included in the size. In examples, calcium silicate products are made from (a) sized glass fibres, wood pulp, quicklime, silica flour, diatomaceous earth, calcium silicate dust filler, bentonite clay, limestone and liquid sodium silicate, and (b) sized glass fibres, wood pulp, hydrated lime and diatomaceous earth. The glass fibre may be made of E-glass or alkaliresistant glass having for example the following oxide composition: SiO 2 , 60-62%; CaO, 4-6%; Na 2 O, 14-15%; K 2 O, 2-3%; ZrO 2 , 10-11%; TiO 2 , 5À5-8%.
