Abstract

1511004 Removing components from fluids; catalytic beds ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 29 April 1975 17836/75 Headings BID B1F and BIT A basket 16 which in use is positioned in a bed (e.g. catalytic) of discrete solid elements to extend the surface of the bed and to remove particles from a fluid flowing into the bed, has a bottom made of mesh and at least one side-wall, the or each side-wall having a bottom portion 21 made of mesh and a solid top portion 22. The opening at the top of the basket 16 is provided with means for restricting the fluid flow therethrough, e.g. the end wall 24 has one or more orifices. The restricting means may be adjustable. In use, the top portion 22 extends below the surface of the bed. The top of the basket may be provided with cap member 30 which causes the reversal of the direction of fluid flow and hence removes some particles from the fluid. In Fig. 1 the downward flow catalytic bed comprises catalytic particles 12 and alumina balls 14. The particles in the bed may comprise one or more of metals, salts, sulphides, zeolites, silica, alumina, zirconia, titania, magnesia, boria and clays.
