Abstract

1510922 Coupling rope ends ARBED-F & G DRAHTWERKE KOLN GmbH 3 June 1976 [4 June 1975] 23051/76 Heading D1T A method of joining the end of one cable to the end of another cable comprises:- (a) tapering the end of one cable and anchoring the tapered end to a first anchoring means: (b) tapering the end of another cable and anchoring the tapered end to second anchoring means; and (c) forming a jointed connection between the first and second anchoring means; steps (a), (b) and (c) being effected in any order and the cross - sectional diameter of the joint thus formed between the cables being not greater than the diameter of the thickest cable. In the drawing the cable was bound with wire 4' at a distance 20d to 10d from one end where d=the diameter of the cable. The two outer layers of cable strands were untwisted and cable core 1 severed close to the binding 4'. The core stump was then bound with wrapping material 5'. The wires of layer 2 were then recombined with staggered cutting of the wires. The resulting stumps of the layer 2 were then wrapped with material 5". The wires of the outer layer 3 were then re-assembled with staggered cutting to reduce the number of strands from 8 to 6, the cut ends being bound as at 5"'. The resulting 6 strands have been pushed through the conical bore of an end fitting 7 and fanned out to make a cable brush 6 in the conical bore. The cable brush 6 has been impregnated with a suitable adhesive. Alternatively wedging elements could have been used to secure the brush 6 in the conical bore. The end fitting 7 has means 8 whereby it can be secured to a connecting element on another rope. The end fitting 7 has a diameter that does not exceed the diameter of the rope and, as shown, it is tapered to form a substantially even transition from cable to end fitting.
