Abstract

1510117 Wired broadcasting systems COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd 4 July 1975 [4 July 1974] 29594/74 Heading H4R A programme selection button in a subscriber unit of a wired broadcast system is held in a latched position after depression and is only released in response to the receipt from a programme exchange of a digitally coded multibit interrogation signal unique to the subscriber unit, the unit responding to the interrogation signal to emit a signal to the exchange only if the selection button was in the latched position. The arrangement is used for billing purposes in a TV distribution system. To select a programme a latching button 9 is depressed to close contacts 3, 4 and 10. At the end of the programme the exchange applies a low D.C. or A.C. voltage to the programme wires 1, 2 to charge capacitors 12, 13, at each subscriber unit and then transmits in sequence address signals corresponding to each subscriber unit. The address is detected by a unit 19 which supplies an enable pulse to a thyristor 22 and an oscillator 20, the oscillator receiving a second enable input from capacitor 13 if switch 10 is closed to send a response tone to the exchange wires 1, 2. The enabled thyristor causes capacitor 12 to discharge through solenoid 11 to release the latched button 9. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a pair of signalling wires separate from the exchange programme wires is provided, and the oscillator 20 is replaced by an amplifier, the exchange sending after each interrogation signal a reply tone which is only amplified and returned to the exchange as the response tone if the button 9 has been depressed. The response tone may be supplied to the exchange wires throughout the release period of the button so that a faulty release mechanism can be detected at the exchange. The response tone may be a harmonic of the tone received by the amplifier. This may be achieved using a frequency multiplier.
