Abstract

1509942 Variable speed gear HARRIS INTERNATIONAL Inc 19 Aug 1975 34452/75 Heading F2D [Also in Division B7] Speed ratios ranging steplessly from one-toone upwards to overdrives only, are provided on a pedal cycle by a rotatable inner shaft 65 adjustable radially within a wheel hub 27 by a rider control 95 to vary the speed ratio imparted to the hub by the shaft through oneway clutches 85 connected to the hub through links 83. The hub 27 bears an the frame at one side on a stub shaft 39 and at the other on a fixed housing 45, supporting, on a pivot 59, a forked arm 57 carrying the inner shaft 65 on bearings 67, 69, the shaft being driven through a sprocket 71 and chain 75 by conventional pedals or by oscillating pedal levers 135, Figs. 6 and 8. The support arm 57 is biased downwards to a concentric one-to-one setting determined by a stop screw 133, and is pivoted upwards to overdrives by tension on a manual cable 95 acting through a linear one-way lock 93, Fig. 4, which locks the arm 57 against downward movement in selected settings, and comprises balls 99 loaded by a spring 129 on to a wedge surface on a plunger 117 connected by a flexible cable 111 to the pivoted arm 57 and moved upwardly freely by tension on the control cable 95, and downwardly by push on the control cable to release the wedging balls 99. In Figs. 6 and 8 the chain 75a driving the inner shaft is driven by pedal levers 135 oscillated about frame pivots 137 to pull cables 141 attached to pulleys 143 carried eccentrically on a shaft 156 connected by one-way clutches 155 to a sleeve 147 carrying a sprocket 157 providing a one-way drive to the chain 75a, the eccentricity producing variable leverage.
