Abstract
1509380 Indicating presence or absence of buried metal objects ELECTROLOCATION Ltd 13 Sept 1976 [14 June 1975] 25485/75 Heading G1N An instrument for determining the presence or absence of a buried cable or metal pipe comprises an array of aerials defining the corners of a multisided area and a receiver for comparing the phases of the signals produced in the coils and indicating whether the signals are in or out of phase. The aerials may be pivotably mounted. The receiver comprises a YES/NO meter to indicate phase equality or inequality and may include a phase discriminator for comparing the outputs from all the coils, Fig. 3A (not shown). Alternatively the receiver uses one coil output as a reference signal and the compares the reference signal with the signals from the other coils, Fig. 3B (not shown). The receiver may combine the outputs of the coils and compare the combined output with the output of one of the coils in a phase detector. Fig. 3C (not shown). The coil outputs in this case are passed through respective high-pass/low-pass amplifiers. The receiver may monitor the signals from the coil at two different frequencies simultaneously, Fig. 3D (not shown). The cable or metal pipe may require to be excited by the use of a generator.
