Abstract
1509293 Measuring directions of boreholes M K RUSSELL AND A W RUSSELL 16 March 1976 [26 March 1975] 12567/75 Heading G1N An instrument for measuring the direction of a borehole, having a longitudinal axis coincident, in use, with the axis of the borehole comprises a gimbel mounted gyro the outer gimbel having its axis coincident with the longitudinal axis of the instrument, means for measuring the angle of rotation of the case of the instrument about said axis relative to the outer gimbal and three gravity sensors for measuring the components of gravity in three non-co-planar directions. As shown, the platform comprises a gyro-rotor 12 mounted in a pair of gimbals 14, 16 and the means for measuring the angle of rotation of the case comprises means for sensing angular movement of the inner gimbal relative to the outer gimbal, in use, and applying a torque by motor 22 to the outer gimbal to rotate it about its axis so that the inner gimbal precesses back to its initial position. The adjustment of the gimbals is measured by a resolver 26. The gravity sensors 28 as shown, are mounted on the platform but these may be mounted on the case of the instrument. In the latter case the signals have to be passed through a second resolver to determine the true components of gravity, Fig. 9 (not shown). A recorder is provided with the instrument, Figs. 7, 8, 9 (not shown), and the azimuth and elevation angle of the instruments are computed.
