Abstract

1509180 Controlling light DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 26 Nov 1975 [2 Dec 1974] 52123/74 Heading G2F [Also in Divisions H3-5] At least part of a plastics sheet, e.g. of polypropylene, with an open pore structure is impregnated with liquid crystal material. Other parts of the sheet may contain a non-mesomorphic organic liquid such as lubricating oil. The liquid crystal material may be painted, printed or sprayed on to one or both faces of the sheet and absorbed by capillary action. The pores, which may vary in size from molecular dimension of the liquid crystal material to 100Á, may be elongate and aligned, whereby the liquid crystal molecules also tend to align. If the liquid crystal material is dichroic, or contains a dichroic additive, a dichroic polarizing layer results. Such may be used for example as (coloured) polarizers either side of an electro-optic nematic "twist" cell; or two such sheets comprising a series of dichroic strips respectively in register with the odd and even lines of a television display and with mutually orthogonal polarizing directions, may provide a stereoscopic display when viewed using spectacles having lenses with mutually orthogonal polarizing directions. The sheet may be coated with lacquer on either side, or may be arranged between electrode bearing glass plates. In the latter arrangement, in which the liquid crystal thickness can be made substantially constant, the liquid crystal material can exhibit dynamic scattering (cholesteric in a nematic host) or a change in colour when viewed via a polarizer (dichroic material in a nematic host, or dichroic nematic material). If the sheet contains either of the latter two types of material and is heated above the isotropic point, changes in colour can be observed using an analyzer.
