Abstract

1509114 Flattening tubular film ATO CHIMIE 28 May 1976 [9 June 1975] 22366/76 Headings B5A and B5B A continuously extruded plastics tube, e.g. of polystyrene, or polyethylene, which is inflated into a cylindrical film or sheet, 9 Fig. 2, is guided into a flat configuration for presentation into the nip of a pair of opposed pinching rolls 16, between a pair of guides 15 having surfaces contacting the sheath and which are each defined at their downstream end adjacent the nip by a straight line 27, Fig. 4, parallel to the nip, and are defined at their upstream ends by the arc of a circle 24, and between their ends are defined by generatrix comprising straight lines 28 extending parallel to a plane 24 which contains the axis of the extruded tube and is perpendicular to the line 27. The surfaces of the guides ensure contact with the film, at their upstream ends, over a greater transverse extent than would occur with flat guide surfaces, and therefore ensure a smaller variation of frictional forces across the total transverse extent of contact and minimize the extent of wrinkles at the edges of the flattened film. The cylindrical film may be extruded vertically upwardly from a rotary die.
