Abstract

1508224 Removing oil from water LIQUID PROCESSING SYSTEMS INC and D G COOK 16 April 1975 [26 April 1974] 15635/75 Heading BID Oil is separated from an oil-in-water dispersion by passing the dispersion downwardly through container 13 containing a bed of oilcoalescing particles 18 and having a perforated bottom 16 and collecting the coalesced oil as a floating layer 19 around container 13. The layer 19 is maintained in a laminar condition. In the embodiment shown the container 13 is mounted in tank 10 which may be positioned in a ship, the oil is discharged via floating weir 27 and the water via openings 21, conduit 22 and pipe 24. The dispersion may be filtered and settled in tank 42 to remove solids and liquids heavier than water. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the apparatus comprises an open-ended cylindrical wall floating in open water and a plurality of floating coalescing containers within the wall and the oil is sucked from the floating oil layer. In Fig. 8 (not shown) the coalescing container is mounted in an underground concrete tank. The coalescing particles may be brominated polyethylene, polyethylene, P.T.F.E., polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or copolymers thereof.
