Abstract

1507832 Indicating apparatus; measuring voltage PLESSEY CO Ltd 24 Nov 1975 [12 Dec 1974] 53820/74 Heading G1J and G1U [Also in Division G5] A bar-type analogue display apparatus comprises a layer of electro-phoretic suspension medium 6 between two electrodes 11, 12, the medium comprising dielectric particles suspended in a non- conducting liquid such that its optical characteristics are changed when the particles are caused to migrate to or away from one electrode 11 by a potential difference between the electrodes, one electrode 12 having a substantial resistance so that a potential gradient can be established along it, and the other electrode 11 having a low resistance so that a uniform voltage Vc can be applied over its whole length, such that when the uniform voltage Vc is between the voltage limits of the potential gradient, particles migrate to the electrode 11 on one side 15 of a line A at which Vc equals the local voltage of the electrode 12, and to the electrode 12 on the other side of the line A, the position of the boundary line A indicating the magnitude of voltage Vc. The electrodes 11, 12 are supported on electrically insulating walls 9, 10 at least one of the electrodes and its supporting wall being transparent. The particles may be white, and the liquid a blue dye solution. The electrode 12 may be formed to give a linear, logarithmic, or other potential gradient. The display may be used to indicate the relative magnitudes of two parameters represented by V and Vc, or, if a standard voltage V is applied to electrode 12, the display represents the absolute value of a parameter represented by Vc. The display is applicable to thermometers, liquid level indicators, fuel gauges, pressure gauges, ammeters, speedometers, etc.
