Abstract

1507601 Selective agglomeration of coal particles AMERICAN MINECHEM CORP 13 Jan 1976 [13 Jan 1975 27 Aug 1975] 01189/76 Heading B2H A method of recovering coal and water from an aqueous slurry of coal and ash fines comprises adding to the slurry a liquid which is lyophobic to water and ash and lyophilic to coal to agglomerate the coal fines, removing the agglomerated coal to leave a substantially coal-free slurry, adding to the slurry a flocculant which is lyophobic to water and lyophilic to ash, and removing the flocculated solids thus formed to leave a solids-free solution of flocculant. The liquid added to agglomerate the coal fines may be light fuel oil, kerosene, creosote, anthracene oil, lubricating oil or chlorinated biphenyls. The flocculant for the ash may be high molecular weight polyacrylamides, polyethylene oxides, polyethylene imines, polyvinyl pyrolidones or polysaccharides. In the embodiment shown, the agglomerated coal fines produced in a vessel 13 are separated from the ash and water in a separator 16 e.g. an elutriator, cyclone, spiral separator or sink-float tank, are dewatered in an apparatus 18, and are then pelletized in an apparatus 21. The coal-free slurry from the separator 16 is mixed with a flocculant and passed to a thickener 25 in which the flocculated solids settle to the bottom and clear water is recovered for re-use. The flocculated solids are dewatered and pelletized in an apparatus 30. In a modification, flocculation, dewatering and pelletizing are performed concurrently in a single rotating drum.
