Abstract

1507379 Hydrocarbyl substituted polyamines BP CHEMICALS Ltd 5 Aug 1976 [22 Aug 1975] 34900/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] A method of preparing a hydrocarbyl substituted polyamine comprises the steps of: (a) reacting, at elevated temperature, a hydrocarbyl halide with an excess of a polyamine in the absence of an inorganic base or basic salt and in the presence or absence of a solvent, (b) neutralizing the reaction product with an aqueous solution of an inorganic base (e.g. NaOH or KOH), (c) distilling the neutralized reaction product to remove excess polyamine, water and any solvent for the reaction product used in the reaction, (d) adding, to the neutralized reaction product, water and a solvent for the hydrocarbyl substituted polyamine (e.g. an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon), allowing the mixture to separate into an aqueous phase and a product phase, and removing the aqueous phase and (e) distilling the product phase to remove the solvent. In step (d), a C 1-8 alcohol may be added to break any emulsion formed.
