Abstract

1507169 Photosetting adhesives BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 13 Aug 1975 [16 Aug 1974] 33795/75 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Photosetting adhesives useful in the production of laminated articles including at least one surface layer capable of transmitting U.V. light comprise a homogeneous mixture of (A) 0À5-10% by weight of at least one aromatic ketone of the formula R 1 -CO-R 2 where R 1 is a phenyl or benzyl group optionally substituted by methyl or halogen, and R 2 is a phenyl group optionally substituted by methyl or halogen, or a methyl group, (B) at least one aliphatic ketone of the formula R 3 -CO-R 4 where each of R 3 and R 4 is an alkyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms, and (C) a combination of either (i) 15-98% by weight of acrylic acid and 0À5-10% of at least one lactam of the formula wherein m is 3-5 or a derivative thereof wherein at least one -CH 2 - moiety is substituted by a methyl group and/or the -NH- moiety is substituted by a methyl or vinyl group, or (ii) 15-88À5% acrylic acid, 5-35% of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and/or t-butylaminoethyl methacrylate, and 5-35% of acrylamide and/or methacrylamide; the amount of component (B) being 1-65% when component C (i) is used and 1-60% when component C (ii) is used. The lactam used in component C (i) may be N - vinylpyrrolidone, N - vinylpiperidone, #- caprolactam, or methyl-substituted pyrrolidone. The adhesive may be used to bond a transparent substrate, e.g. glass, polyolefin, polyacrylic, polymethacrylic, or polyamide, to another substrate, e.g. a plate or foil of a metal such as aluminium, or glass, ceramics, porcelain, wood or plastics material. The adhesive is set by irradiating the laminate assembly with ultraviolet light (including wavelengths of 0À25-0À28 micron) through a transparent surface layer.
