Abstract

1507148 Control circuits for battery chargers WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 16 Sept 1975 [26 Sept 1974] 41820/74 Addition to 1438290 Heading H2H A battery charging control circuit similar to that described in Specification 1,438,290 includes a circuit, Fig. 5a, which detects the gassing point during charging of the battery, the detection of this point causing the control circuit to reduce the charging current. A graph of the increase in cell voltage per minute of charging time against the total charging time shows two maxima between which there is a minimum (X), Fig. 8 (not shown), corresponding to the gassing point. The circuit of Fig. 5a detects this minimum rate of voltage increase and includes two voltage signal stores 1, 2 and two comparators A, B. To detect the minimum value it is necessary initially to detect a negative slope in the graph and each measurement of the rate of change of the battery voltage necessitates the measurement and comparison of the volts/cell of the battery in three successive charge current interruptions, the measurements being initiated by sampling command signals. The first measurement VS2 is stored in the store 2, and the second measurement VS1 is stored in the store 1. The comparator A compares the measurement VS2 with VS1 whilst the comparator B compares the third measurement Vc with VS 1 and the outputs of these comparators are fed to a third comparator or slope detector. The slope detector is connected to a negative slope memory which remains in its initial state until a negative slope is detected. Whilst the memory is in its initial state, a charge state detector holds the charging of the battery in the BULK or constant current charge phase. When the negative slope is detected, the charge state detector is able to change state upon the detection of a positive slope, thereby detecting the minimum point of the graph or the gassing point of the battery. At this instant the control circuit reduces the charging current to start the TAPER charge phase.
