Abstract
1506649 Treatment of aqueous effluent with activated sludge BAYER AG 22 May 1975 [1 June 1974] 22195/75 Heading C1C [Also in Division F1] A process for treating aqueous effluent containing biodegradable material comprises suspending activated sludge in the effluent; breaking up the activated sludge into small flakes; introducing an oxygen-containing gas in fine distribution into the resulting finely divided suspension; and, after the oxygen has been at least partially consumed, recoagulating the finely divided suspension in a potential flow to form settlable flakes. (A potential flow is a flow about an axis of rotation which complies with the law rÎc = const.; where r= distance of a particle of liquid or solid from the axis of rotation, and c = velocity of the particle). In the flow diagram (Fig. 3) the oxygen-containing gas is injected at nozzles (103, 104, 105) into the activated sludge tank (120); the cyclone-style coagulator (113) is between the sludge tank and the settling tank (107). Partly purified effluent and finely divided activated sludge is recycled via pipes (112 and 102). High utilization of oxygen with minimal energy consumption.
