Abstract

1506449 Blood sampling apparatus L A GUERRA 18 Aug 1975 34265/75 Heading A5R [Also in Division F1] A blood-taking device comprises an evacuated container 12 closed by a stopper 10 having extending therethrough a threaded tube 14 with an opening 16 adjacent the proximal end thereof and a lip 20 extending from the open distal end 19, a cannula support section 22 having a socket opening 29 and a valve formed by the flexible wall .29' of a plug 27 whereby in use the cannula 23 is inserted into a vein and the distal end 19 of the container section is then inserted into socket 29, lip 20 engaging wall 29' to allow fluid communication between the vein and tube 14, and rotation of container 12 relative to tube 14 moving the container distally to place tube opening 16 inside the container thereby causing blood to be sucked into the container by the vacuum. A projection 30 is provided to facilitate insertion of the cannula into the patient. With the container disconnected from the cannula support section 22, fluid may be injected into the body of the patient by insertion of a syringe needle through plug 27. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 7-12 (not shown), the distal end of the tube is not provided with a lip and a bayonet coupling is provided for joining the tube into the socket opening of the cannula support section, the distal end of the stopper cooperating with the proximal end of the cannula support section to prevent disengagement of the bayonet coupling except when the tube is moved to its full extent out of the container, thereby sealing the blood sample inside the container.
