Abstract

1506362 Surgical sewing device T AKIYAMA 20 April 1976 [17 Nov 1975] 15946/76 Heading D1G A surgical ligature comprises a thread 22 having a plurality of spherical projections 23 at intervals along its length, a hooked needle 24 attached to one end of the thread and a ring-shaped member 25 attached to the other end, the diameter of the hole 26 in the member 25 being slightly larger than that of the projections 23. In use, the needle is passed around a blood vessel 34, Fig. 13, and inserted through the hole 26 thereby forming a loop around the blood vessel, and the thread is pulled up tightly to stop the flow of blood, the loop being secured in position by the engagement of two adjacent projections 23 against the member 25. The thread 22, projections 23 and member 25 may be made of synthetic resin such as polyvinyl alcohol, and may be manufactured using moulds, Figs. 3 to 7 (not shown), having hemi-spherical recesses (5, 15) connected together by grooves for receiving the thread. The ring 25 may be coated with a thin film (65) of polyvinyl alcohol, Figs. 17 and 18 (not shown); alternatively the ring may be constructed by tying a double knot in the end of the thread, Fig. 16 (not shown). In Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown), the projections (63) are frusto-conical and in Fig. 19 (not shown) the projections (83) are hollow hemispheres. The device may also be used in stitching or suturing operations.
