Abstract

1505721 Firefighting monitors SHORT BROS Ltd 11 May 1976 [13 May 1975] 20166/75 Heading A5A [Also in Division B2] A fluid discharge nozzle assembly, e.g. for a water monitor on a ship, comprises an elongate nozzle 11, having a discharge opening at one end and being closed at the other end, mounting means on the nozzle between the mouth and the closed end for pivotally mounting the nozzle on a support, an inlet formed in the nozzle at or adjacent the mounting means for admitting fluid into the nozzle, and a guide assembly 20 within the nozzle which guides fluid, in use, from the inlet to the closed end of the nozzle and thence to the discharge opening. The guide assembly comprises a tubular member coaxial with the nozzle 11, providing a central outlet passage 21 from a reversing chamber 35 at the closed end of the nozzle to the discharge opening, and having vertical vanes 34 on its outer surface, which define two semi-annular initial flow passages in annular passage 22, which lead from two circular inlet ports 31, 32 to the reversing chamber 35. Fluid is supplied through a feed pipe 14 in the mounting means 10, which divides into two branches 15, 16, communicating with the inlet ports 31, 32 through rotatable joints 17. The mounting means comprises a yoke 18 having, at its ends, depending portions which engage with trunnion pins 19 through ball races 33, the nozzle 11 being carried on the yoke 18 and the pins 19 being fixed to a support 12. The reversing chamber has a shaped flowreversing formation 22a provided therein. The direction of discharge of fluid may be controlled manually or by jets at the closed end of the nozzle controlled by sensing devices 29, 30.
