Abstract

1505658 Rear-view mirrors COMBINED OPTICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Nov 1975 [7 Nov 1974 18 Aug 1975] 48255/74 and 34303/75 Heading B7J [Also in Division G2] A vehicle external rear-view mirror comprises a mounting arm 7 pivotally connected to a backing plate 5, a rubber ring frame 6 connecting together the plate 5, a one-piece plastics moulding reflector element 1 and a transparent glass sheet 4 protecting the planar viewing surface 2 of the element 1, wherein the rear surface of the element 1 is made reflective by metallizing and coating with protective paint, the reflecting surface of the element 1 having a main planar portion 3a, which in use is positioned adjacent a vehicle, and an outer generally aspheric or acylindrical surface portion formed by linear prisms 3b whose prism angles decrease as the prisms are positioned further outwardly. The portions 3b are arranged so that the separate images produced are integrated in the eye of the viewer so that the mirror reflector 1 appears to have a plane portion at the left side and a convex mirror portion at the right side which curved portion does not cause any apparent discontinuity of image. The field of view of the reflector is thus increased outwardly of the rear-view mirror. In another embodiment the reflector element is also formed with in use upper and lower acylindrical portions to extend the field of view in the vertical direction.
