1505630 Portable cooking unit W F TIDWELL and L M COBB 15 Nov 1976 47536/76 Heading A4D A portable cooking unit comprises a sheet metal box having a split-level upper portion and two vertically spaced divider walls 4a and 4b dividing the box into two major compartments, the first of which comprises a combustion chamber, access to which is provided by a door 8d, and a barbecue chamber disposed above the combustion chamber and provided with a grill 11 for supporting food to be cooked by the direct action of heat from the combustion chamber, and the second of which comprises an oven in which food placed on a grill 13 is heated by hot air passing through the opening 5 between the walls 4a and 4b and leaving the unit through a chimney 22 mounted on the upper surface of the box, hinged lids 6 and 7 being provided for the barbecue chamber and the oven respectively. A drip tray 20 is positioned below the oven; if desired, this tray may be used to heat foods, heat being supplied by hot gases passing through an opening 5a between the lower edge of the wall 4a and the bottom of the box. The grills 11, 13 are slidably supported on angle bars 10, 12 respectively and may be moved back and forth between the oven and the barbecue chamber. The bars 10, 12 may have grooves (56), Fig. 7 (not shown) for receiving skewers; skewers may alternatively be placed in slots 18, 18a in the upper edge of the front wall 8 of the box, the other ends of the skewers in the oven portion being supported by a grooved angle bar (57), Fig. 2 (not shown) mounted on the back wall (9) at the same level as the slots 18a. The combustion chamber is provided with an opening 16 for removing ashes, and air vents 17 in the end of the box. Combustible materials may be placed in the chamber in a heat resistant metal basket (53), Fig. 4 (not shown), which may be provided with an electric heating element (54), Fig. 5 (not shown) or gas-fired burners (55), Fig. 6 (not shown). The unit is preferably provided with wheels to facilitate movement thereof.
