Abstract

1505219 Corrugating sheets D E JACOBSON 8 June 1976 23552/76 Headings D1L and D1S [Also in Division B5] In a combination of a corrugator and a device for joining together overlapping marginal edges D-1, E-1 of strips D, E of liner material as they are fed into the corrugator, the corrugator comprises a rotatable pre-heater roll B supported on a shaft 10 and an idler roller 14 rotatably supported between arms 12 pivotally supported on the shaft 10, and the device comprises a shaft 34 extending between the arms 12 above the roller 14, parallel to the shaft 10, and adjustably supported in a non-rotatable position from the arms 12; a resilient wheel 58 rotatably mounted on the shaft 34 and frictionally engaging the roller 14 to be driven thereby; a glue reservoir F supported by the shaft 34; a shaft 68 supported in the reservoir F and parallel to the shaft 34; a glue applicator wheel 84 disposed in the reservoir F, rigidly secured to the shaft 68 and projecting outwardly through a slot 44 in the reservoir F to apply glue to the marginal edge D-1; and means for transferring rotational movement from the wheel 58 to the shaft 68 to drive the wheel 84. In one embodiment, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, the shaft 34 is held against rotation by pins (26a), Fig. 2 (not shown), on bolts 26, Fig. 1, engaging a longitudinal spline 36 therein. The shaft 34 is supported on pads (32), Fig. 2 (not shown), urged upwardly by springs (30) in openings 22, Fig. 1, in supports 16 secured to the arms 12. Rotation of the bolts 26 raises or lowers the shaft 34. The wheel 58 and a gear 60 are mounted on a sleeve rotatable about the shaft 34. The gear 60 meshes with a gear 64 on the shaft 68 to drive the wheel 84 from the wheel 58. Resilient blocks 90 form seals with the wheel 84 to prevent escape of glue G from the reservoir F. In operation, the bolts 26 are adjusted to move the shaft 34 so that the wheel 58 is in pressure contact with the roller 14 and the wheel 84 is in light pressure contact with the edge D-1. As the roll B rotates, the strips D, E are moved thereby and the roller 14 is rotated to drive the wheel 58 and thus the wheel 84 so that glue is applied to -the edge D-1 which becomes bonded to the edge E-1 when they are brought into contact. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, the resilient wheel 144, corresponding to the wheel 58 of Fig. 1, and a sprocket 150 are secured to a sleeve 142 rotatably mounted on a shaft 118, corresponding to the shaft 34 of Fig. 1. The sprocket 150 drives, through a link belt 152, a sprocket 152 on a stub shaft 156 carrying a gear 168 meshing with a gear 170 on a shaft 158 carrying the glue applicator wheel 160. Resilient strips 164 form seals with the wheel 160 to prevent the escape of glue.
