Abstract

1505146 Calcium fluoride and phosphate from waste water OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM CORP 7 March 1975 [3 April 1974] 9696/75 Heading C1A Waste water containing fluorine and P 2 O 5 values is treated by agitating the waste water with an amount of the CaCO 3 slurry to provide between 0À3 and 0À8 equivalents of Ca<SP>++</SP> per equivalent of fluorine values in the water; thereafter, in a second stage, agitating the calcium carbonate-treated waste water with more CaCO 3 in an amount to form CaF 2 solids, and such that the total addition in the two stages provides not less than 0À8 equivalents and preferably 1-2 equivalents of Ca<SP>++</SP> per equivalent of fluorine values; and separating the solids from the aqueous phase following the second stage. The separated CaF 2 solids may be washed with a mineral acid and then with water and the washings combined with the treated waste water and agitated with CaO to raise the pH to 3-4 to recover further CaF 2 solids. After separation, the aqueous mix may be treated with more CaO to raise the pH to 5-7 to form insoluble CaHPO 4 .
