Abstract

1505077 Seaming non-metallic sheet material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 28804/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division C3] A porous diaphragm for an electrolytic cell is made from a plurality of sheets of filled polytetrafluoroethylene, i.e. polytetrafluoroethylene sheets containing removable solid particulate additive, by fusing a fluorine-containing polymer into the sheets at or near juxtaposed edges of the sheets at a temperature which will not substantially decompose the filler in the sheets, solidifying the fluorine-containing polymer so as to effect joining of the sheets and thereafter removing filler from the thus joined sheet. In one embodiment, juxtaposed edges of two filled polytetrafluoroethylene sheets are overlapped with a strip of the fluorine-containing polymer. Heat and pressure is applied between heated platens to effect joining. The platens may be lightly greased with silicone grease to prevent sticking. In another embodiment, one or more strips of fluorine-containing polymer are made to partially overlap and are fused to one or more edges of a filled PTFE sheet. The protruding portions of the strips are used to bond the sheet to other PTFE sheets which have not had strips fused to their edges. In a modification, the strips are replaced by tabs at intervals along one or more edges of a filled PTFE sheet. Preferably, the temperature at which the fluorine-containing polymer is fused into the PTFE sheet is lower than the melting point of PTFE. Specified fluorine-containing polymers are polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, a fluorinated ethylene/propylene copolymer or an ethylene/chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer. Specified fillers for the PTFE are starch, e.g. maize and/or potato starch, waterinsoluble inorganic bases or carbonates, e.g. calcium carbonate, and cellulose. In addition, the PTFE may contain a non-removable filler, e.g. titanium dioxide, to render the diaphragm wettable when installed in an electrolytic cell. In Example 1, laminated starch-filled PTFE sheets prepared according to Example 1 of Specification 1,424,804 and having a mesh gauze woven of monofilament polypropylene yarn laminated thereto are butt-joined using an FEP strip laid along and fused to the butt joint. In Example 2, the polypropylene gauze is replaced by an FEP backing sheet. In Example 3, cellulose is used as filler and an FEP backing sheet is used. In Example 4, starch is used as filler, an FEP backing sheet is used and the fluorine-containing polymer is a strip of a copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene.
