Abstract

1504884 Waveguides MARCONI CO Ltd 20 May 1975 [22 June 1974] 27841/74 Heading H1W A waveguide is formed from a number of layers of filamentary material, the filaments in at least one layer being wound around the axis of the waveguide, e.g. in a helix. Alternate layers may have helically wound filaments and filaments laid parallel to the axis of the waveguide. The filaments may be conductive or may consist of carbon fibre. The layers may be impregnated with an epoxide resin. The internal surface of the waveguide is conductively coated, e.g. with copper and silver. To improve adherence, a layer of nickel may be interposed between the conductive layer and the resin-bound filamentary layers. Fig. 4 shows sections 11, 12, 13 made by the method of the invention and provided with spigot-andsocket joints. The assembled sections are covered with an overall external structure 14 consisiting of layers made in the same manner as those of the sections. A filter may be realized by embedding iris members 5 in the sections as the filamentary layers are formed. To facilitate this, the members 5 may be held between the axially-aligned parts of a twopart mandrel (see Fig. 3, not shown) upon which the layers are formed.
