Abstract

1504127 Valves SCOUILL MFG CO 7 May 1975 [21 May 1974 28 Aug 1974] 22649/74 and 37688/74 Heading F2V A tyre valve for mounting in a wheel rim from the outside comprises a stem 1 with a flange 9 of smaller diameter than the aperture in the wheel rim. An elastomeric grommet around the stem has a flange on the end remote from the flange 9 and on tightening a retaining nut 7 and washer 5 a bulge 25 forms in the grommet to retain the valve in the wheel. If used with a tubed tyre, Fig. 3 (not shown), a rubber spud (31) attached to the inner tube has a rigid member (33) embedded in it around the aperture in it in which the grommet is compressed, the wheel aperture being large enough to enable the nut and washer to pass through it. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 6-11 (not shown), instead of the retaining nut there is provided a lock nut which snaps over a conical surfaced serration on the exterior of the stem when a dust cap is screwed on to the stem. As an insurance against the valve blowing out of the wheel aperture a spring washer (45) having diametrically opposed tabs (47), Fig. 13 (not shown), may be mounted on the stem between the grommet and the flange 9.
