Abstract

1503872 Resistance thermometers ROSEMOUNT ENG CO Ltd 3 Feb 1977 [5 Feb 1976] 4581/76 Heading H1K A resistance thermometer comprises a track of temperature sensitive material on a flat insulating substrate to which one or more blocks of insulating material are fastened in thermal contact, the block or blocks collectively providing the thermometer with a cylindrical outer surface. Typically the track, consisting of platinum particles in a glassy medium, is printed on a rectangular alumina or silica substrate with lead wires extending axially from one end, the block or blocks are of material which is the same as or has a similar thermal expansion coefficient to the substrate and is fixed thereto by a cement or glaze of like properties, e.g. borosilicate glass, which is preferably applied to the substrate as a water-based slurry. As described, the substrate is a snug fit in a diametral groove extending from one end or side of a cylindrical block to a point just short of the opposite end or side and formed during moulding of the block or by sawing, the fixing material forming a surface flush with that of the block. In modified forms the block may have two or more slots into each of which one or more substrates is fitted.
