Abstract

1503795 Electrolytic capacitors P R MALLORY & CO Inc 29 July 1975 [8 Aug 1974] 31699/75 Heading H1M In a cathode for an electrolytic device, e.g. capacitor or battery, the surface contacting the electrolyte comprises a layer of copper sulphide, selenide or telluride on a copper-containing substrate. As shown the cathode is the can 12 of an electrolytic capacitor, and may be copper alloyed with about 0À1 wt. per cent silver. Surface coating 18 of CuS, CuSe or CuTe is applied by treating the copper surface with a solution of the appropriate acid or other reactive compound. The reagent may be a polysulphide, or selenous or tellurous acid in the form of SeO 2 or TeO 2 dissolved in H 2 SO 4 . The coating may be preformed, or the reagent added to the working electrolyte or coated on to porous anode 11. The working electrolyte may be deaerated sulphuric, phosphoric or hydrochloric acid and may contain a depolarizer, e.g. copper sulphate.
