Abstract

1503771 #-Hydroxy-α-aminoacids SNAMPROGETTI SpA 9 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 14715/75 Heading C2C #-Hydroxy-α-aminoacids (e.g. serine) are produced by a variation in the Strecker synthesis or a modification thereof but using instead of the carbonyl compound a precursor thereof which is convertible to the carbonyl compound under the reaction conditions and has the formula where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon radicals, X is a halogen atom or a group of formula -O-CO-R<SP>7</SP>, and R<SP>7</SP> is a hydrocarbon radical. Thus these precursors may be (a) reacted with hydrogen cyanide and ammonia, (b) reacted with an alkali metal cyanide and ammonium chloride or (c) reacted with hydrogen cyanide and then with ammonium carbonate to give a hydantoin which is hydrolysed.
